Cities with Most Michelin-Starred Restaurants; Japan Dominates

5 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Michelin Guide has long become a global reference for restaurants and dining places. First published in 1900, the book has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Currently, the Michelin Guide covers 18,106 restaurants worldwide, including those with Michelin Stars.

The Michelin Star is a prestigious ranking given to restaurants that meet the strict culinary standards of the Michelin Guide. The star rating not only reflects the quality of the restaurant's food, but also its consistency, originality, and overall presentation techniques.

Worldwide, there are approximately 3,000 restaurants that have one to three Michelin stars, spread across various countries. Which cities have the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants?

1. Tokyo, Japan: 169 restaurants

Tokyo, the capital of Japan, boasts 169 Michelin-starred restaurants, as cited by Travel and Leisure. From convenient ramen to elusive 10-course omakase dinners, Tokyo's culinary world is fascinating. Start with outstanding sushi and sashimi at Okamoto, or visit Myojaku to enjoy fish caught in the clear waters of the Tenry River in Nagano. ESqUISSE, a two-star restaurant in Ginza, where head sommelier Eiji Wakabayashi became the first recipient of the Michelin Sommelier Award in Japan.

2. Paris, France: 134 restaurants

With 134 Michelin-starred restaurants, Paris is a worthy destination for global culinary tourism. Michelin-starred restaurants in this city are spread across various districts, offering rich and surprising flavors.

Culinary enthusiasts can embark on an adventure with delightful classic dishes at Arpège, a three-star restaurant and winner of the Green Star award—a new achievement described by Michelin as the front-runner in sustainable practices. Le Meurice's Alain Ducasse-curated space brings the ambiance of Versailles, while across the river, Substance revamps French gastronomy with flair and foam.

3. Kyoto, Japan: 93 restaurants

The former capital of Japan has the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants per capita, according to a study published last year by Chef's Pencil, an online cookbook. Currently, Kyoto itself has 93 Michelin-starred establishments, with 72 having one star, 16 with two stars, and five with three-star status. Three-star establishments in Kyoto include Mizai, Gion Sasaki, Isshisoden Nakamura, Hyotei, and Kikunoi Honten.

4. London, UK: 83 restaurants

The number of Michelin Star restaurants in this city does not surpass Tokyo or Paris, but food lovers can find a wide variety of dishes there. From French, Indian, Sri Lankan, and Thai dishes to vegan, fire-only, and zero-waste options, everything is possible in this cultural melting pot. Each restaurant feels unique.

At Ikoyi, a two-star restaurant in St. James's, West African spices blend with British produce in special dishes like smoked jollof rice with wild garlic oil. In Victoria, A Wong, also awarded two stars, serves delicate Cantonese dim sum. St. Barts, which also received a green star in Smithfield, offers dishes prepared using traditional British cooking techniques.

5. Osaka, Japan: 79 restaurants

As a cultural hub during Japan's Edo period, Osaka earned the nickname “tenka no daidokoro,” or “the nation's kitchen.” Today, Osaka has 79 Michelin-starred restaurants, according to the 2025 guide, including three three-star restaurants, 11 two-star restaurants, and 65 one-star restaurants.

Kushikatsu and doteyaki dishes are the most popular, but the city's starred restaurants offer innovative dishes. At Hajime, guests are treated to the unique “chikyu” vegetable dish, designed to resemble the Earth, made from over 60 seasonal ingredients arranged in a single bite. La Cime is where you can indulge your taste buds with the unique French “boudin dog” made with blood sausage and bamboo charcoal.
