TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China seeks de-escalation in the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and urges both parties to negotiate, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
"China upholds a just and impartial stance. We have and will continue to promote talks for peace in our own way and play a constructive role in promoting de-escalation," Guo told reporters, as quoted by Antara.
Beijing is deeply concerned about the ongoing situation and hopes that both sides will resolve this issue through dialogue and consultation, the spokesperson added.
Previously, the Chinese government had expressed its willingness to help resolve the border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.
The offer was conveyed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in a meeting with Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, July 11, 2025.
"China is willing to uphold an objective and fair position and play a constructive role for the harmonious coexistence between Thailand and Cambodia," Wang said, as quoted by Anadolu.
He added that both nations are friends of China, expressing his hope that they can approach each other in good faith, resolve the dispute through friendly dialogue, and stabilize the situation as soon as possible.
Clashes Erupted in Border Regions
As reported by Aljazeera, local Thai news agency The Nation reported that there were casualties on both sides, including civilians. Authorities in four provinces bordering Cambodia had announced the evacuation of residents amid the escalation.
Meanwhile, Cambodian media Phnom Penh Post led with the headline "Thailand Strikes First." The media referred to the clash as a “blatant act of military aggression” and “an unprovoked assault against Cambodian troops.”
The news site CamboJA took a more measured approach, describing the clash as "exchanging fire" between Thai and Cambodian forces at the border and adding that this was the “first clashes since deadly fighting in May that reignited a simmering territorial dispute.”
Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been escalating since May 28, following a brief exchange of fire in the disputed border area. The incident resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Since then, both countries have closed their borders.
