Cambodia and Thailand Trade Calls to Cease Fighting in Border Regions

6 days ago 15

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Cambodian and Thai governments on Thursday, July 24, 2025, pressured each other to halt their attacks, withdraw their forces, and refrain from taking actions that could exacerbate tensions.

The statement was conveyed by the Cambodian Foreign Ministry amid the escalating conflict between the two neighboring countries.

"Cambodia calls on Thailand to immediately cease all hostilities, withdraw its forces to its side of the border, and refrain from any further provocative actions that could escalate the situation," the statement said, as reported by Newsweek.

The Cambodian government also strongly condemned what they called "reckless and hostile" actions by Thailand.

"Cambodia will take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its people," the statement said.

On a separate occasion, Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, in a press conference, said fighting must stop before talks with Cambodia could occur, as reported by Aljazeera.

Phumtham stated that the conflict between the two neighboring countries occurred earlier in the morning because Cambodia fired heavy weapons into Thailand without specific targets and into civilian areas.

Citing CNA, the fighting, which has entered its second day on Friday despite international calls for an immediate ceasefire, has killed at least 16 people.

Nevertheless, Phumtham emphasized that there has been no declaration of war from Thailand and that it acted in self-defense to protect its sovereignty.

On Friday, clashes between the two Southeast Asian countries have expanded to 12 locations, indicating a broader conflict, as yesterday's fighting occurred in four locations: Ubon Ratchathani, Si Saket, Surin, and Burirum. Meanwhile, residents have been evacuated, and schools in the affected areas have been closed.

Thai and Cambodian troops clashed on Thursday morning around 07:45 a.m. in disputed border areas. Initially, there was an exchange of fire between the ground forces, which then escalated in intensity.
