TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of high waves that could potentially occur in several maritime areas from July 14 to 17, 2025. The waves or sea swells could reach heights of 2.5 to 4.0 meters.
BMKG forecaster Furqon Alfahmi stated that the wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia generally move from the southeast to the southwest at speeds ranging from 6 to 30 knots. Meanwhile, in the southern part of Indonesia, the winds generally move from the east-southeast at speeds of 8-30 knots.
"The highest wind speeds are observed in the northern part of the Malacca Strait and the Indian Ocean west of Aceh to the Nias Islands. Also in the Banda Sea and the Arafura Sea," said Furqon in a written statement today, Monday, July 14, 2025.
These conditions, according to Furqon, will cause an increase in wave heights of 1.25 - 2.5 meters, which are likely to occur, among others, in the Indian Ocean west of the Nias Islands and Mentawai Islands, the central part of the Java Sea, the eastern part of the Java Sea, the Bali Sea, and the Makassar Strait.
As for the very high waves, ranging from 2.5 - 4.0 meters, there is a possibility of occurrence in the northern part of the Malacca Strait and the Indian Ocean from the west of Aceh, Bengkulu, Lampung, to the south of Banten, West Java, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, NTB, and NTT.
"The potential for high waves in several areas could pose risks to maritime safety," said Furqon.
Therefore, according to Furqon, BMKG always advises the public to remain vigilant, especially for fishermen who engage in activities using transportation modes such as fishing boats, as well as for barges and other vessels.
"The public living and working in coastal areas with potential for high waves are also requested to remain vigilant," he added.
