8 High-Cholesterol Foods You Should Avoid

7 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - High-cholesterol foods are often not noticed and recognized before it's too late to avoid. For those with high cholesterol, avoiding high-cholesterol foods has become a duty. If high cholesterol is left untreated, it can lead to other health problems.

Despite that, many people still underestimate high-cholesterol foods. Here are high-cholesterol foods that need to be avoided:

1. Fast Food

Fast foods like burgers, fries, fried chicken, and spaghetti are indeed very delicious. Ready-to-eat foods are usually very practical and easy to make, they are cheap, and they taste good. However, fast foods are triggers for cholesterol containing harmful fats that can cause high cholesterol levels.

2. Shrimp

Seafood such as shrimp is also forbidden for high cholesterol patients. All foods made from shrimp like shrimp crackers, crispy shrimp should be avoided by patients with high cholesterol. Despite being low in fat, shrimp contains 189 milligrams of cholesterol in 100 grams of shrimp.

3. Offal

Another food that should be avoided by those with high cholesterol is offal. Offal is very delicious and is usually served in dishes such as soto, beef tongue soup, satay, and brain curry. Offal is not recommended for people with high cholesterol because it contains very high levels of purines.

4. Egg Yolk

Egg yolks are one of the forbidden foods for high cholesterol patients. Although highly nutritious, eggs also contain high cholesterol. In one egg, there is about 185-200 milligrams of cholesterol.

Basically, egg yolks are very good and beneficial for health, especially for children. Nevertheless, it is advisable for high cholesterol patients to limit egg yolk intake to 1 egg per day to maintain normal cholesterol levels.

5. Processed Meat

Processed foods such as sausages, ham, and other processed meats contain many additives like salt and preservatives that can increase cholesterol levels in the body. It is advisable to consume processed foods in limited amounts and replace them with healthier foods like skinless chicken, tofu, or tempeh.

6. Clams

Clams are a source of protein, vitamin B, iron, and selenium which are very good. However, clams are high in cholesterol. For example, a 3-ounce (85-gram) serving of canned clams provides 214 milligrams of cholesterol.

7. Trans Fats

Another forbidden cholesterol food is food containing trans fats. Trans fats in foods like popcorn, cookies, french fries, biscuits, and corn chips should be consumed in reduced portions. Of course, you can eat them occasionally, but it's best not to eat them too often.

Trans fats are fats formed when oil becomes solid fat. This fat, also known as trans fat or trans fatty acids, consists of two types, namely naturally formed fatty acids and artificial fatty acids.

8. Fried Foods

Finally, the food that should be avoided because it contains high cholesterol is fried foods. Although they are delicious and are a perfect tasty snack during gloomy weather, those with high cholesterol should avoid fried foods. Fried foods contain high saturated fat, so they are very dangerous for those with high cholesterol.

Often, fried foods like fritters, risoles, filled tofu, oncom, and misro are fried with used cooking oil. Certainly, there are various health impacts that will be experienced by those with high cholesterol due to consuming a large amount of fried foods.
