TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Global food guide TasteAtlas has unveiled its list of the 100 Best Culinary Cities in the World for 2025/2026, highlighting six Indonesian cities celebrated for their rich and diverse food culture: Jakarta, Bandung, Padang, Surabaya, Surakarta, and Yogyakarta.
The rankings draw from more than 590,000 verified user ratings across nearly 19,000 dishes in the TasteAtlas database.
Naples, Italy, secured the top position this year, reinforcing Europe’s strong presence on the list. Still, Indonesia boasts one of the highest representations from Southeast Asia, a recognition of the nation’s vibrant culinary heritage.
Jakarta Leads the Indonesian Lineup
Jakarta ranks 21st globally with a score of 4.64, placing it just below Singapore. Diners are encouraged to try local favorites such as soto Betawi, nasi uduk, gado-gado, chicken congee, and meatball soup. Restaurants highlighted by TasteAtlas include Restoran 1945, Lapo Marpadotbe, Asinan Betawi H. Mansyur, Rumah Makan Marannu, and Bubur Ayam Barito.
Bandung Ranks 34th
Known for its creative street snacks, Bandung earns a score of 4.55 and takes the 34th spot. Must-try dishes include batagor, cireng, nasi kuning, mi kocok, and serabi. Popular stops include Warung Nasi Ibu Imas 81, Lemper Purnama, Baso Tahu Mang Ade, Serabi Kinca Suji – Eka Rasa, and Batagor Yunus.
Padang Shines with World-Famous Rendang
Padang ranks 45th with a score of 4.51, propelled by its globally renowned rendang — previously named the world’s best braised dish by TasteAtlas. Its culinary repertoire also features Nasi Padang, gulai, and Sate Padang, with local favorites such as Lamun Ombak Rumah Makan, Pagi Sore, Resto Selamat, and Restoran Simpang Raya.
Surabaya, Surakarta, and Yogyakarta Complete the List
Surabaya sits at 65th place (4.42) thanks to iconic dishes like rujak cingur, rawon, Soto Lamongan, lemper, and nasi pecel. Recommended eateries include Soto Ayam Ambengan Pak Sadi, Soto Ayam Cak To, Bebek Goreng Papin, Rawon Pak Pangat, and Warung Sedap Malam.
Surakarta (Solo) ranks 92nd (4.34), beloved for nasi liwet, Bakso Solo, tengkleng, serabi, and ayam penyet. Yogyakarta follows at 97th with its signature dishes such as gudeg, sate kere, sayur lodeh, bakpia pathok, and karedok.
These recognitions underline Indonesia’s strong culinary identity and growing presence on the global food stage, with each city offering distinctive flavors shaped by history, culture, and local ingredients.
