29 Remain Missing Following Sinking Ship in Bali Strait; Search Efforts Continue

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Entering the third day of search operations, rescuers have yet to find any new victims from the sinking ship, the Trunu Pratama Jaya ferry, in the Bali Strait. The operation held on Friday, July 4, 2025, involved search efforts by sea, air, and land, but it was without results.

"Today's search started at 07:00 AM local time, but there are no signs of the victims' whereabouts," said Deputy of Operations and Preparedness of Basarnas, Ribut Eko Suyatno, in an official statement on Friday, July 4.

The National Sear and Rescue Agency, or Basarnas, also corrected the number of survivors from 29 to 30. One of the survivors, Wahyudi, was not registered because he was picked up by his family without reporting to the JOint SAR post.

A total of 21 victims have been handed over to families in Ketapang, and nine in Gilimanuk. "We have found 36 passengers today, consisting of 30 survivors and six fatalities. Twenty-nine other passengers remain missing," he said.

Rescuers are focusing the search operation in the Bali Strait, from north to south. Three air rescue unit (SRU) teams are also deployed to survey the same area. Meanwhile, the ground SRU team is monitoring the coastline from Ketapang (East Java) to Gilimanuk (Bali).

According to Eko, weather poses a major challenge in today's search. Based on data from the BMKG Meteorology Station Class III Banyuwangi, the condition in the Bali Strait is marked by light rain, 4-14 knot winds from the south-southwest, waves of 0.4-1.25 meters, and dominant southward ocean currents with speeds of 0.86-2.06 m/s.

Basarnas also responded to information from the Malaysian Embassy about alleged Malaysian nationals in the sinking ship. Upon inspection of the alleged foreigner's travel car, no foreign nationals were recorded in the vehicle's manifest. "The vehicle's registration number is indeed in the records, but the mentioned foreign national names were not found," he said.

At least 34 agencies and volunteer organizations are involved in the search operation. These include the Basarnas Central Office, SAR Offices in Surabaya and Denpasar, the Indonesian Navy in Banyuwangi and Gilimanuk, the Water and Air Police Department of East Java Regional Police, the Indonesian Navy Air Wing 2, and local fishers.

Several equipment were deployed for the search and rescue efforts, including the Basarnas Dauphin HR 3606 helicopter, the Water Police helicopter, KRI Tongkol 517, KN SAR Permadi, as well as speedboats and patrol vessels from various agencies.
