TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced that the national poverty rate in March 2025 stood at 8.47 percent, equivalent to 23.85 million people. This figure represents a decrease of 0.20 million people or 0.10 percentage points compared to September 2024, when it was recorded at 24.06 million people or 8.57 percent.
BPS Deputy for Social Statistics, Ateng Hartono, highlighted the disparity in poverty rates between urban and rural areas. "In March 2025, the urban poverty rate was 6.73 percent, while rural poverty was 11.03 percent," he stated at a press conference at the BPS office in Jakarta on Friday, July 25, 2025.
He noted that the percentage of poor people in urban areas slightly increased from 6.66 percent in September 2024. Conversely, the percentage of poor people in rural areas saw a decrease from 11.34 percent in September 2024.
Ateng also explained that the national poverty line in March 2025 was Rp609,160 per capita per month, an increase from Rp595,242 per capita per month in September 2024. Specifically, the urban poverty line in March 2025 was Rp629,561 per capita per month, while the rural poverty line was Rp580,349 per capita per month.
Geographically, the majority of Indonesia's poor population, 12.56 million people, remains concentrated on the island of Java. "This accounts for about 52.66 percent of the total national number of poor people," Ateng added.
In contrast, Kalimantan recorded the lowest number of poor people, with 0.89 million people, representing approximately 3.75 percent of the national total.
BPS clarified that the data for the National Socio-Economic Survey in March 2025 was collected in February 2025, accommodating the fasting month of Ramadan that fell in March. The survey covered a significant sample of 345,000 households distributed across Indonesia's 38 provinces and 514 districts/cities.
