Wikipedia has paused the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate article summaries on its platform following criticism from editors. The AI-generated summaries appeared at the top of Wikipedia pages with a yellow label that reads 'unverified,' prompting users to click to read the summaries, as of Friday, June 13, 2025.
According to a report by Tech Crunch on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the trial announced in early June was targeted at users who installed the Wikipedia browser extension and opted to participate.
Editor Protests
After the trial, editors protested the use of AI, deeming it a risk to Wikipedia's credibility, especially due to potential errors in the AI-generated summaries. Concerns were raised about instances where AI hallucinations occur, producing information that appears to be true but is actually inaccurate.
These concerns reference cases of other media outlets experimenting with similar technology, such as Bloomberg, which was forced to correct articles and suspend some of its trials due to errors generated by AI. Despite this, the platform remains interested in AI-generated summaries for purposes like expanding content accessibility.
Prior to this, the Wikimedia Foundation, the owner of the free encyclopedia Wikipedia, had planned to use AI to support information provision, as documented in a report by TechCrunch on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. The foundation declared it would use AI for new features and provide tools for editors, moderators, and monitors to efficiently complete tasks.
Wikimedia claimed that they intended to use AI as a tool to facilitate human work rather than replace it, stating that generative AI would be used to automate certain tasks.
Quoted from Wikimedia Foundation, the free encyclopedia organization announced that it would use AI to build features that reduce technical barriers. 'This is to enable the core of Wikipedia to spend their valuable time on what they want to achieve, rather than the technical methods of achieving it,' stated Wikimedia Foundation.
